You become – what you believe

As a company primarily involved in ship-breaking, our story is mostly about protecting the environment. We believe that unless ship decommissioning is carried out in a sustainable, eco-friendly manner, the activity will be self-defeating. We have our reasons to believe that – if it becomes a hazardous activity, sooner or later, environmentalists will raise a hue and cry, and, ultimately, governments and corporate entities will have to pay heed to their war cry. And what will their war cry be? Stop!

Now, if we conduct ourselves responsibly and keep the environment at the core of our operations, we will be doing ourselves a huge favour.

And we won’t have to stop.

Our Mission

Our mission is to set global standards for safety and environment protection and raise the bar for others to follow. In all our activities, we strive to fulfill this mission.

Our Vision

Our vision is to become a company worthy of emulation, and to be world’s safest, cleanest and greenest conglomerate. We constantly endeavour to translate our vision into reality.

Looking back – and dreaming ahead

India has a rich and extensive maritime history – we go way back to the 3rd century, BC, when inhabitants of the Indus Valley initiated maritime trading contact with Mesopotamia. As trade between India and the Greco-Roman world increased, spices became the main export from India to the Western world. The spice trade was the main reason why Europeans established their empires in India.

And if ships were setting sail, they also needed to be dismantled, or decommissioned, after their life was over. In olden times, wooden-hulled ships were simply set on fire. But the advent of metal-hulled ships created a new requirement – ships now had to be dismantled, or broken. Until the late 20th century, ship-breaking took place in port cities of industrialized countries, such as the United Kingdom and the United States. But in the mid 20th century, low-cost East Asian countries began to dominate ship breaking, with countries such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Korea and Taiwan becoming prominent ship-breaking destinations.

Today, India is the world-leader in ship-breaking. And we, at Leela Green Ship, are proud to be the torchbearers of our country’s tradition of ship-dismantling. While we have interests in diverse fields, ship recycling is our flagship activity. We are a very well-respected and renowned name in the industry. With our commitment to sustainability, safety, and protection of the environment, we have virtually redefined the very concept of ship breaking globally. Indeed, we have raised the bar for others to follow, having set new standards for decommissioning ships in an eco-friendly and green way.

All our operations have the environment at heart – we are committed to minimizing our ecological impact. Not just our ship-recycling activity, out other business interests are also built upon the premise of taking as little from nature as possible, and giving back to it, as much as possible.

In the years to come, we will continue to challenge ourselves, and set an example for others to emulate.

I would like to sign off by sharing with you a quote that I am very fond of: “It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind, which determines the way we will go.”

I promise you we will go the right way!

KOMALKANT F. SHARMA
Group Chairman
